Rabbi Howard A. Berman, z"l

Founding Rabbinic Director (1949-2024)

After attaining his undergraduate degree in European History from the University of London, England, he studied for the Rabbinate at the Leo Baeck College in London, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, where he received the degree of Master of Hebrew Letters and was ordained in 1974. He also pursued graduate studies in American Religious History at the University of Chicago Divinity School and the Chicago Theological Seminary. In 1999, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

Rabbi Berman was the Co-Editor of The Union Prayer Book, Sinai Edition, Revised, the contemporary-language version of the historic liturgy of American Reform Judaism, published in 2012. He was also the Editor of The New Union Haggadah, published in 2014 by the Central Conference of American Rabbis, as well as the 50th Anniversary Edition of The Rise and Growth of Reform Judaism, the landmark study by W. Gunther Plaut, published in Autumn 2015 by the Jewish Publication Society of America.
